CHAPTER THIRTEEN

/ But not yet…

Jen’s normal pattern was to homeschool Adam their oldest in the morning, which was normally done in their large living room upstairs, where she could also keep an eye on the other three at the same time. The next two oldest would be given some type of activity to keep them busy, although not part of a semi-structured curriculum like Adam’s was. Then David, who was now eight months, would normally be found in his playpen, or on his stationary suspended spring set, where he could bounce around, barely touching the floor, but which helped to strengthen his little legs before he learned to walk.

And this particular Tuesday was not unlike any other Tuesday, except that around eleven that morning, the managing partner had called Jen about a proposal that she needed to discuss with the other partners. Another law firm, which operated statewide, wanted to buy them out. The senior partner of that firm had dropped by their offices and talked to the managing partner during the previous two hours. With their proposal in hand, the managing partner wanted to have a three-way phone conversation with Fran and Jen. Fran was already on the line, and now she had also connected with Jen. As can be expected, this was important and so Jen ended up being on the phone for about forty-five minutes to an hour. Then all three realized that this would take more time to digest, with Fran finally instructing her managing partner to fax them both a copy of the proposal, and then the three of them would meet at Fran’s place at 7 pm on Friday evening to discuss this matter further.

When Jen arrived upstairs from the home office, Adam had turned the TV on and the three oldest were watching some program, which they were allowed to do, whenever Jen was not available, as had just happened. In further surveying the scene, Jen noticed that David, who had been in his playpen, was keeled over against the side rails. Realizing that this had to be uncomfortable for him, she walked over to straighten him out, but then noticed that he had turned blue. The next few minutes were just a blur, as what took place next was like a bad dream being played out in front of Jen’s eyes. What she did not immediately realize is that David had swallowed and choked on a pompom that had been detached from a stuffed play dog.

Since David was not old enough to play with their dog Skipper, Jen had bought him this stuffed dog. David had somehow broken off the pompom attached to the toque on the dog’s head and had stuffed it in his mouth. However, Jen was not yet aware of it, only knowing that her son was all blue and did not seem to be breathing. She picked
